Mani, Laconia, Peloponnese Hellas

On the south of the Peloponnese the sturdy mass of Mount Taygetos meets with the sea. Here the Aegean meets the Ionian Sea creating a 75-kilometer long peninsula. This is where the area of Mani spans out covering the centre southernmost finger of the pentadactyl peninsula and according to the poet Nikoforos Vrettakos, this is the place of «the love affair between the sun and rocks». Dominant cliffs, burning stones and light, a land of olive groves and sea, an inaccessible mountainous landscape with few natural resources and springs but none the less, a safe and hospitable place.

The Mani has been designated «Open Museum», since this is the 98 of the 118 traditional settlements of the Peloponnese, 8 castles, and now 1800 and post-Byzantine churches, 32 endemic plants, dozens of cobbled streets and paths of length 160 km, 5 gorges And many caves, with the most beautiful lake known caves in the world, those of Dirou.
